What impact does populist politics have on museums? The  international research project investigated the influence of right-wing populist movements on the museum landscape. As technology partner, we developed a project website and an app for the CHAPTER project.

Developing the project website

As a technology partner, we initially conceptualised and designed a website with all relevant information about the project. We developed a uniform, friendly and inviting design language in pastel colours. The project website conveys the research focus and the basic principles (‘facets’) of populism, these facets reappear as a square shape in the logo design.

The CHAPTER app

In terms of content, the CHAPTER app allows users to engage with selected objects from the collections of three museums in Berlin, Krakow and London on the subject of populism.

In terms of design, our idea was to develop an aesthetic based on social media and to work with large-format content. In the UX design and the realisation of the interactive elements, the main focus was on appealing to users’ emotions (in relation to the content). Open questions and ‘soft’ results instead of clear right/wrong were also intended to deliberately reflect grey areas in opinion formation in the app. So-called ‘crowd feedback’, i.e. insight into the opinions of other users on the questions asked, should be incorporated into the app experience in order to be able to compare one’s own feelings.
