MobiCell
Locating and protecting vulnerable road users through networked smartphones
R&D ProjectThe feasibility of V2X communication between different cyclists and pedestrians is investigated with the help of a test system to be developed, consisting of smartphone app, mobile radio (Cellular-V2X) and cloud services.

How can vulnerable road users be better protected from road traffic collisions? In this research project, which was designed as a feasibility study, a digital application was developed to answer this question.
Project launch in Magdeburg
The MobiCell system is designed to enable the location- and time-independent detection of dangerous situations, such as potential collisions, and coordinate evasive maneuvers. The data is based on real-time sensor data from road users’ smartphones. The aim is to make it easier for all citizens to get started by using the cell phones they already have. The fluxguide team and employees of Ifak (Institute for Automation and Communication e.V., Magdeburg) met at the kick-off in Magdeburg in summer 2023.
The practical tests, in which various collision scenarios on foot and by bike were tested and documented, took place in Vienna and elsewhere. Various application scenarios were analyzed, such as intersections with visual obstructions and overtaking manoeuvres. The tests provided important insights for the optimization of algorithms and user experience.
Results and final report
The final results of the MobiCell project were presented at a final online event in summer 2024. The full final report can be downloaded here.
Here is a brief insight into the testing and the prototype:
The MobiCell project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport as part of the mFUND innovation initiative.
